The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is based in Preston, Lancashire. Its history goes back to 1828, and it became a university in 1992.
What you'll study
You complete 120 credits at Level 6: four core modules of 20 credits each, plus 40 credits of options (either the 40-credit project or two 20-credit modules). The exact list of options can vary by intake.
Law at the University of Central Lancashire is taught by Lancashire Law School, one of the established law schools in the North West of England. The university is based in Preston and has a long history of professional and vocational education, which shows in the way the law top-up is designed: alongside the academic core, a whole module is given to graduate skills and employability.
Equity and Trusts in Life and Death covers trusts, wills and how property passes between people, a core area of private law.
Land Law explains ownership, leases, mortgages and rights over land, which you need for property and commercial work.
Law for Entrepreneurs applies the law to starting and running a business: contracts, company structures and risk.
Graduate Professional Skills and Employability builds legal research, writing and career planning for your next step.
Choosing your options
Your 40 credits of options let you shape the degree around your goals. Choose the 40-credit project if you plan an LLM or want to research a legal question in depth. Choose Company Law for commercial practice, International Humanitarian and Criminal Law for international and human rights work, Medicine and the Law for healthcare law, Street Law for community legal education, or Human Trafficking for criminal justice and NGO roles.
How the top-up is taught and assessed
You study online through the university's virtual learning environment, with reading lists, case materials and assignment briefs. Assessment is mostly coursework: legal essays, problem questions, case analyses and reports, plus the research project if you choose it. ABC Horizon advisers support you with enrolment, deadlines and study planning in Arabic or English.
Your degree and certificate
On completion you receive an LLB (Hons) Law awarded by the University of Central Lancashire, with the university's certificate and transcript. In 2025 the university began operating under the name University of Lancashire, so newer documents may show that name; it is the same institution.
