Other top-up degrees

What is a health and social care management top-up?

The BSc (Hons) Management and Leadership in Health and Social Care top-up is the final year (Level 6, 120 credits) of a UK honours degree for people who already work in health or social care. If you hold a Foundation Degree, an HND, a DipHE in Nursing or another Level 5 qualification in a relevant subject, you join the last year and graduate with a full bachelor's degree in about 12 months, studying online alongside your job.

The course is designed for practitioners who are moving into supervision and management. It focuses on leading teams, planning services and using research to improve care, rather than on clinical skills.

Who is this top-up for?

  • Nurses, midwives and allied health staff with a DipHE or Foundation Degree who want a full honours degree.
  • Team leaders, shift leaders and deputy managers in care homes, nursing homes, hospices or home care.
  • Staff in hospitals, clinics, NGOs and community services who are taking on management responsibilities.
  • Anyone in Turkey, Syria, the Gulf or elsewhere who wants a UK management degree in the health sector without leaving work.

Work experience is required: you need at least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) experience as a health or social care professional, because much of the learning is applied to your own workplace.

How the final year is built

You study four core modules: Leadership Practice in Health and Social Care, Strategic Management in Health and Social Care, Evaluating Research for Evidence-Based Practice and an Undergraduate Major Project on a topic you choose. Assessment is by reflective practice, essays, the major project and contributions to online discussions, so there are no exams to sit in the UK. The course is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), which adds a recognised management credential to your degree.

Careers after the top-up

  • Care manager in elderly care homes, nursing homes, children's homes, hospices or supported housing.
  • Practice manager in clinics and medical centres.
  • Operational or service manager in hospitals and public health services.
  • Further study: a master's such as healthcare management or an MBA; see the UK master's degree options.

This is a management degree. It does not give a licence to practise as a nurse, doctor or social worker; those professions are regulated separately in each country.

How to apply in four steps

  1. Send your documents: your Level 5 certificate and transcript, passport copy, a short CV showing your health or social care experience and, if you have one, an English test result (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent).
  2. Check your eligibility: we review your qualification and experience against the entry requirements.
  3. Receive your offer: the university reviews your application and issues the offer.
  4. Pay and start: pay the all-inclusive fee and begin studying online at the next intake.
