What is an accounting and finance top-up degree?

An accounting and finance top-up degree is the final year (Level 6, 120 credits) of a UK honours bachelor's degree, designed for students who already hold a Level 5 qualification such as a Pearson BTEC HND. Instead of studying three years, you join the last year directly and graduate with a full BSc (Hons) or BA (Hons) in about 12 months.

The degree you receive is the same honours degree awarded to the university's other final-year students. It is listed on the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework at Level 6, which is the level employers, professional bodies and master's programmes ask for.

BSc or BA in accounting: what is the difference?

BSc (Hons) Accounting and Finance

Offered here by the University of Gloucestershire and Wrexham Glyndwr University. The BSc puts more weight on analysis: financial reporting standards, audit, financial markets and quantitative decision-making.

BA (Hons) Accounting and Financial Services

Offered by London Metropolitan University. It covers the same accounting core and adds the financial services side: banking, financial instruments and economic modelling.

Both are full UK honours degrees at the same level. Employers and master's programmes treat them as equivalent, so choose the one whose modules match the career you want.

Professional qualifications after your degree

Many accounting graduates continue to a professional qualification such as ACCA, CIMA or CPA. An accounting degree gives you the technical base for these exams, and some degrees earn exemptions from early papers. Exemptions depend on the exact university and modules, so check the professional body's exemptions list for your chosen degree before you enrol. Our advisers can help you plan the route.

How to apply in four steps

  3. Receive your offer: the university reviews your application and issues the offer.
  4. Pay and start: pay the all-inclusive fee and begin in January or September.
